Brighton Youth Centre

Redevelopment of an inaccessible 1960’s building

2023 - 2025

Architect: Alter Architects

Project Background

Brighton Youth Centre has undergone a major redevelopment at its Edward Street site.

Most of the inaccessible 1960’s purpose built structure has been demolished and remodelled, while the east side has been retained. The new youth centre is fully accessible with the creation of an outdoor space to the rear, a sports hall, rehearsal rooms, events space, dance studio, art room, digital room, counselling rooms and a refurbished skatepark on the top floor providing a larger seating area with views over the city.

Inclusive Design Scope

In 2023, I was commissioned by Brighton Youth Centre in the role of access consultant to work alongside Alter Architects. My remit covered RIBA Stage 3 through to Stage 4. Due to ever increasing costs, the original scheme for a larger new build youth centre had to be scaled back to a smaller hybrid scheme retaining part of the existing structure.

Planning permission for the revised hybrid scheme was granted in May 2024 and the new centre opened to the public in October 2025.
